Just like IELTS, the TOEFL is also an English proficiency exam to test non-native English speakers that are willing to apply to universities in the United States of America as well as other countries. Almost all educational institutes accept it and consider it a valid testing procedure. Along with a major English language testing procedure besides the IELTS, it is an educational testing service trademark. For international study, TOEFL is a must as it proves you are good enough to take up the course at an educational institute in the English language.

Just like the IELTS exam, in TOEFL there are two types of tests. One of them is called the TOEFL IBT and the other is called the TOEFL PBT. Let us first talk about the TOEFL IBT first. The TOEFL IBT is the abbreviation of internet bases test and the test is taken online on the internet. The TOEFL IBT was introduced in 2006 as an alternate to the TOEFL Computer based test, more famously known as the TOEFL CBT. The reason for terminating the TOEFL computer-based test was because it usually took out inaccurate results, thus affecting the credibility of the testing service. The TOEFL internet-based test is taken anywhere computers, and the internet is available.

Now let us see the second type of test in TOEFL. The second test is called the TOEFL PBT, which stands for the paper based test. It is an alternate for the TOEFL internet-based test, where the internet or computer facility is not available. However, preference is given to the TOEFL internet-based test. The TOEFL paper-based test is now replaced by the TOEFL PDT, which stands for Paper delivered test from 2017 onwards. Changes regarding the test pattern and the scoring were made.

Apart from the two main tests, there are other TOEFL exams such as the TOEFL junior and the TOEFL ITP, whose abbreviation is an institutional training program. The TOEFL junior is an assessment for students in middle school to see if their English is up to the mark. The TOEFL junior standard includes a paper exam whereas the comprehensive version is a computer-based test. Their subjects consist of reading, comprehension, listening comprehension, etc. The TOEFL ITP is almost the same as the IELTS Paper-based test.

Let us now look into the people who are considered eligible for the TOEFL test. There are no such specified criteria, but atleast one should have completed high school for taking the exam. In addition to this, there is no restriction on the age limit. As far as the dates are concerned, there are no exact Calander wise dates of tests. One will have to choose the test center, and after that, the available dates to take the test will be shown. Applicants will also be given the option to choose the desired time slot at a specific center. You will have to apply for the test online, and the registration fee can vary from $160 to $260.
